Stuck building your Bubble.io app with AI? 9 problems AI can't fix (and how to fix them)
Short answer: AI tools such as Bubble's AI Agent are good at generating pages, data types and standard workflows, but they get stuck on problems that need to see your running app: slow pages, workflows that silently fail, privacy rules, workload costs and a weak data model. Most can be fixed with Bubble's own debugger, server logs and App Metrics. If the same problem returns after every fix, it's architectural — that's when an expert pays off.
The pattern is always the same. AI gets your Bubble app to "almost done" in days. Then progress stops: a page takes eight seconds to load, a button does nothing, a search comes back empty, and every prompt that should fix it breaks something else. We see it regularly in the apps founders bring to us, and after 150+ Bubble builds since 2019, the problems are remarkably predictable.
The reason is simple. An AI assistant sees your prompt, not your running app. It can't watch a workflow execute, see which search is eating your workload units, or log in as another user to check what data leaks. This guide covers the nine problems where that gap shows up, how to diagnose each one with Bubble's built-in tools, and when it's time to stop prompting and get help.
Quick diagnosis: find your problem
| Symptom | Likely cause | Bubble tool to use |
|---|---|---|
| Pages are slow | Advanced filters, nested lists, too many elements | Search constraints, page structure |
| A button does nothing | A false condition or a failed step | Debugger, step-by-step mode |
| Searches return nothing | Privacy rules hiding the data | Privacy tab, test user accounts |
| Bubble bill is climbing | Frequent or unconstrained searches | App Metrics |
| API calls fail | Token, parameter or endpoint errors | API Connector, server logs |
| Layout breaks on mobile | Fixed widths instead of responsive containers | Responsive tab |
| AI changed the wrong thing | Unreviewed AI edits | Version control, savepoints |
| Every feature needs a workaround | Weak data model | Data tab, option sets |
| Every fix breaks something else | Architecture, not a single bug | A pause and a plan |
1. Your Bubble app is slow
Symptom. Pages take seconds to load, lists appear slowly, and it gets worse as data grows.
Why AI gets stuck. AI builds what works with test data. Ten records load instantly no matter how the search is written; ten thousand don't. Asked to "make it faster", an AI typically adds loading states rather than fixing the query.
How to fix it. Bubble's performance guide names the usual culprits:
- Move filters into the search itself. Constraints in the search run on the database and are fast; filters added with
:filteredare "advanced" filters and generally slower. - Avoid nested repeating groups — their cost multiplies with every row.
- Simplify pages. The number of elements on page load matters more than their type; many small pages beat a few huge ones.
- Remove unused plugins. They load whether or not you use them.
- Don't chain searches that depend on each other; they run in series, not in parallel.
Get help if the app is still slow after the searches are constrained — that usually means the data structure itself forces expensive queries.
2. A workflow doesn't run (or runs and does nothing)
Symptom. You click a button and nothing happens, or a scheduled workflow never seems to finish.
Why AI gets stuck. An AI can read the workflow you describe, but it can't see it run. Most "nothing happens" bugs are a condition that evaluates to false or a step that fails quietly — invisible from the editor.
How to fix it.
- Open the page in preview and use the debugger in step-by-step mode. It pauses after every action so you can check the data at each step.
- Inspect the element: the debugger shows each condition in green (true) or red (false), which usually explains the problem in seconds.
- For backend and scheduled workflows, open Logs → Server logs. The server logs show every workflow that started, whether its condition was met, and any server-side errors.
Get help if workflows behave differently in development and live, or fail only for some users — that points to data or privacy issues, not the workflow.
3. Searches return nothing — or users see each other's data
Symptom. A list is empty for normal users but fine for you, or the opposite: someone can see records that aren't theirs.
Why AI gets stuck. Both problems come from privacy rules. An AI adds generic rules, or none, and has no way to log in as two different users to check the result.
How to fix it.
- Remember how Bubble works: privacy rules are enforced on the server, and a search only returns data the current user is allowed to see. An empty list is often a rule doing its job.
- Create one test account per role (admin, customer, vendor) and check every important page while logged in as each.
- Be careful with the "Ignore privacy rules" option on API workflows. It's useful for admin jobs and dangerous anywhere a user controls the input.
Get help if you handle payments or personal data. A privacy mistake there is a security incident, not a bug.
4. Your Bubble bill keeps climbing (workload units)
Symptom. Workload unit (WU) usage jumps, you get warnings, and upgrading the plan feels like the only option.
Why AI gets stuck. AI optimises for "it works", not for cost. A search that refreshes on every page view, or a workflow that recalculates data nobody changed, works perfectly — and costs you every month.
How to fix it.
- Open App Metrics and drill down from total usage to the specific actions and expressions, as described in Bubble's guide to tracking workload. Bubble notes that a lightweight search refreshed often can cost more than a complex workflow that runs rarely.
- Constrain searches and paginate lists instead of loading everything.
- Move heavy calculations into scheduled backend workflows, and for large datasets use "Schedule API workflow on a list" instead of "Make changes to a list".
Before upgrading, read optimizing workload and our Bubble.io pricing guide. In our experience, about half of "we need a bigger plan" cases are really "the app is wasting workload units". To see what a healthy monthly bill looks like for your app type, try the Bubble.io cost calculator.
5. API calls fail or return errors
Symptom. An integration (Stripe, OpenAI, a CRM) returns an error, nothing, or worked yesterday and doesn't today.
Why AI gets stuck. AI often writes calls from outdated documentation or guesses endpoint names and fields. It can't see the provider's actual response, which is where the real error message is.
How to fix it. In the API Connector:
- Initialize the call again. Initialization sends a real request, reads the response and maps its fields, so the provider's error message appears right there.
- Check Bubble's list of usual causes: an invalid or expired token, a missing required parameter, a wrong endpoint URL, or test data left in a parameter field.
- Keep API keys in fields marked Private, so they stay on the server.
Get help if the problem involves webhooks or payments. Failures there are silent by default and cost real money.
6. The layout breaks on mobile
Symptom. Desktop looks right, but on a phone elements overlap, text overflows or the page scrolls sideways.
Why AI gets stuck. AI-generated layouts often use fixed widths and positions that only look right at one screen size. Each prompt fixes one breakpoint and breaks another.
How to fix it. Rebuild the problem section with Bubble's responsive design model: container layouts (row, column, align to parent), minimum and maximum widths instead of fixed ones, and checks in the editor's Responsive tab at phone, tablet and desktop widths. Bubble's guide to building responsive pages walks through the setup.
Get help if the whole app was built without responsive containers — then it's a redesign, not a fix.
7. The AI Agent changed the wrong thing — or can't change what you need
Symptom. After an AI edit, something unrelated stopped working. Or the AI Agent says it can't do what you asked.
Why AI gets stuck. Bubble's own documentation on editing apps with the AI Agent lists clear limits: it can't delete data types or fields, it only works with your development database, and in backend workflows it doesn't support custom events, payment, plugin or analytics actions. Asking repeatedly won't get around those limits.
How to fix it.
- Read the plan the Agent shows before approving a UI change — that's the moment to catch a wrong edit.
- Use version control: create a savepoint before a big AI session, and restore it from the History tab if things go wrong. On plans with premium version control, work in a separate branch.
- Do the unsupported parts — deleting fields, payment actions — by hand.
External agents connected through Bubble's announced MCP interface will face the same trade-off; we explain why in Bubble.io MCP explained.
8. The database can't keep up with the app
Symptom. Every new feature needs a workaround, the same information is stored in several places, or reports never quite add up.
Why AI gets stuck. AI designs the data model for the prompt in front of it, not for the product you'll have in six months. Typical results: text fields where a link to another data type belongs, duplicated fields, and lists that grow without limit.
How to fix it.
- Draw your data model on one page: each data type, its fields and how types link to each other.
- Replace fixed lists of values (statuses, categories, roles) with option sets.
- Link records to each other instead of copying text between them.
Get help if real users and real data are already in the app. Restructuring a live database means migrating data safely — the most expensive place to make a mistake.
9. Every fix breaks something else
Symptom. You've spent days prompting. Each fix works for an hour, then something else breaks.
Why AI gets stuck. This isn't a bug — it's the sum of problems 1 to 8. When the foundation is weak, local fixes collide, and an AI that sees one prompt at a time can't see the pattern.
How to fix it.
- Stop prompting and create a savepoint.
- Write down the three to five flows that must always work, such as sign up, the core action and payment.
- Test those flows after every change, as each user role.
- Fix causes, not symptoms: data model first, then privacy rules, then workflows, then layout.
This is also the clearest sign it's time for outside help.
When to stop prompting and call a Bubble expert
Plenty of founders finish AI-built Bubble apps themselves, and you may not need anyone. But these five signals mean an expert will save you more than they cost:
- You've been stuck on the same problem for more than a week
- Fixes keep breaking other features (problem 9)
- The app handles payments or personal data and nobody has checked the privacy rules
- Your workload units or plan costs keep rising without new users
- Real users are waiting, and every day of delay costs you
A good Bubble developer won't throw away your AI's work. They'll keep what's solid, fix the foundation and hand you an app you can keep building on — with AI, if you like. If you're choosing someone, our guide to hiring a Bubble.io developer in the AI era lists the questions that separate real experience from confident prompting.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't Bubble's AI Agent fix my app?
The AI Agent works from your prompt and the app's structure, not from watching the app run, so it can't see slow searches, false conditions or privacy rules hiding data. It also has documented limits: it can't delete data types or fields, only works with the development database, and doesn't support payment, plugin or analytics actions in backend workflows.
Why is my Bubble.io app so slow?
The most common causes are searches filtered with :filtered instead of search constraints, nested repeating groups, pages with too many elements on load, unused plugins and chained searches that run one after another. Moving filters into search constraints and splitting heavy pages usually brings the biggest improvement.
How do I find what's using my workload units in Bubble?
Use App Metrics in your Bubble app. It lets you drill down from total workload usage to the specific actions and expressions that consume it. Frequently refreshed searches are often a bigger cost than complex workflows that run rarely.
Why does my Bubble search return no results?
Usually because of privacy rules. Bubble enforces them on the server, and a search only returns the records the current user is allowed to see. Test the page logged in as each type of user to confirm whether the rule or the search is the problem.
How do I debug a Bubble workflow that isn't running?
Run the page in preview and use the debugger in step-by-step mode, which pauses after each action and shows conditions as true or false. For backend or scheduled workflows, check Logs then Server logs, which list every workflow that started, whether its condition was met and any errors.
When should I hire a Bubble expert instead of using AI?
When the same problem has lasted more than a week, when fixes keep breaking other features, when the app handles payments or personal data, or when costs rise without new users. At that point the issue is usually the app's foundation, which AI tools can't see.
The bottom line
AI gets a Bubble app started faster than ever; it doesn't finish it. The last stretch — performance, privacy, cost and a data model that can grow — needs someone who can see the running app and has solved these problems before. Use the tools above to diagnose what's wrong. Fix what you can. And when the same problem keeps coming back, that's not a sign to write a better prompt.
