n8n hosting and maintenance — so your workflows keep running after the build
We set up self-hosted n8n, watch every workflow, apply updates, keep backups and fix what breaks. We also take over workflows built by someone else, and make the small changes you need each month.
What is n8n hosting and maintenance?
n8n hosting and maintenance is the ongoing work of running a self-hosted n8n instance and the workflows on it: the server, security updates, n8n version upgrades, backups, monitoring for failed runs, and fixes when a connected tool changes its API. n8n is reliable software, but self-hosting means someone is responsible for it. Without that person, workflows tend to fail quietly until a customer or an accountant notices.
Do you need n8n maintenance?
- "A workflow stopped weeks ago and we only found out from a customer."
- "Our n8n is several versions behind, and we're afraid an update will break something."
- "The freelancer who built our workflows isn't available anymore."
- "We don't know if our n8n server is backed up, or how we'd restore it."
- "We need small changes every month, but not a full project each time."
What's included?
- Self-hosted n8n setup on a server you own, with HTTPS, a production database and secure credential storage.
- Monitoring and error alerts so a failed run is noticed in minutes, not weeks.
- Updates to n8n and the server, tested before they reach your live workflows.
- Backups of the database and workflows, with a restore that has actually been tested.
- Fixes when a workflow breaks because a connected tool changed.
- Small changes each month, such as a new field, a new step or a new notification.
- Takeover of workflows built by someone else: review, documentation, then maintenance.
How does monthly n8n maintenance work?
- Review. We start by reading your current setup and workflows and writing down how they work.
- Secure. We fix the basics first: backups, alerts, credentials and server security.
- Monitor. Failed runs trigger an alert, and we investigate before they pile up.
- Update. New n8n versions are tested on a copy before going live.
- Report. Each month you get a short summary: what ran, what failed, what was fixed and what changed.
What usually goes wrong with self-hosted n8n?
When we look at an n8n instance someone else set up, the same problems come up again and again:
- No alerts. Workflows fail and nobody knows until the missing data is noticed.
- No tested backups. There may be a backup, but nobody has ever tried to restore it.
- Old versions. The instance is many releases behind because updating felt risky.
- Credentials everywhere. API keys pasted into workflows or shared documents instead of n8n's encrypted credential store.
- One person's knowledge. Only the original builder understood the workflows, and they've moved on.
- A database that keeps growing. Execution history is never pruned, until the server runs out of space.
Each of these is simple to fix once someone owns the instance. That's most of what maintenance is.
Self-hosted n8n or n8n Cloud?
| Self-hosted n8n | n8n Cloud | |
|---|---|---|
| Where data lives | On a server you choose | On n8n's infrastructure |
| How you pay | Server cost plus maintenance | Subscription based on executions |
| Updates and backups | Your responsibility (or ours) | Handled by n8n |
| Best for | High volume, sensitive data, custom setups | A few workflows, no infrastructure to manage |
If you run one or two simple workflows, n8n Cloud is usually the better deal and you don't need us for hosting. Self-hosting pays off with volume, data-control requirements or a growing number of workflows.
Who has access, and where does the data go?
The server is yours, in your account with your hosting provider. We get the access we need to maintain it, and you can revoke it at any time. Credentials are stored encrypted in n8n, not in documents or chats. Workflows that send data to an AI model are documented, so you always know what leaves your server and where it goes.
What do we need to get started?
- Access to your n8n instance, or permission to set up a new one in your hosting account.
- A list of the workflows that matter most, and who relies on each one.
- Access to the accounts the workflows connect to, so we can test and fix connections.
If you don't have n8n yet, we'll recommend a hosting setup sized for your volume and help you open the account in your own name.
How much does n8n maintenance cost?
Monthly maintenance starts at $250 per month. A one-time setup of self-hosted n8n starts at $500, and taking over existing workflows starts with a free review of your instance. Server costs are paid directly to your hosting provider.
The retainer covers monitoring, updates, backups, fixes and a set amount of change work each month. Larger new workflows are quoted separately, with milestone-based payments.
When is n8n maintenance not a fit?
Good fit when…
- Your business depends on workflows running every day
- You self-host n8n, or want to
- Nobody in-house owns the server and updates
- You need regular small changes
Not a fit when…
- You run one or two simple workflows that work fine on n8n Cloud
- Someone on your team already maintains n8n well
- The workflows are experiments nobody relies on yet
Frequently asked questions
Should I self-host n8n or use n8n Cloud?
Use n8n Cloud if you run a few workflows and don't want to manage a server; updates and backups are handled for you. Self-host when volume is high, data has to stay on infrastructure you control, or you need custom setups. Self-hosting is cheaper at scale but needs someone responsible for updates, backups and monitoring.
What does n8n maintenance include?
At Webziper it covers monitoring and error alerts, n8n and server updates tested before going live, database and workflow backups with tested restores, fixes when connected tools change, small monthly changes and a monthly report. Larger new workflows are quoted separately.
Can you take over n8n workflows built by someone else?
Yes. We first review the instance and every workflow, document how they work and flag risks such as missing backups or outdated versions. After that you can choose maintenance as-is, or fixes and improvements first.
How much does n8n maintenance cost per month?
Webziper's n8n maintenance starts at $250 per month, with server costs paid directly to your hosting provider. The amount depends on the number and complexity of workflows and how much change work you need each month.
